The Three Payout Tasks: W-8BEN, PIN, Wire

Start on approval day: W-8BEN for the 10% treaty rate, the PIN postcard (4 attempts, 4-month limit), wire with pinyin payee and SWIFT. Don't race the payout window.

A true scene first

Ads approved, balance accruing — and here’s the classic crash: the site owner assumes payouts are automatic, hits $100, and discovers the PIN was never verified. Payment suspended; a free month wasted. This lesson lays out the three verifications with waiting periods so you can do all of them on approval day and let the cycles run in parallel with the earning.

Verification one: tax info (the W-8BEN form, 10 minutes)

  1. AdSense → PaymentsManage settingsTax info → submit W-8BEN
  2. Fill your identity truthfully; country: China; claim the tax treaty benefit (Royalties category) — the China-US treaty rate is 10%; without it the default withholding is 30%: the same revenue, twenty points apart

You’ll see: tax info status flips to approved.

Verification two: the address PIN postcard (2-4 weeks of waiting, the stickiest one)

  • At a $10 balance, Google auto-generates a 6-digit PIN and mails it to your account address (to China usually from Singapore/Malaysia, 2-4 weeks, with real loss rates)
  • Received: PaymentsVerify → enter the PIN — instant pass
  • Unverified for four months after generation, Google pauses ad serving on your site — the money isn’t lost, but income stops until you verify. Check your address now, not at $10

You get four mailing attempts (one automatic + three manual resends); if all fail, use the official form for identity verification (ID + address proof).

Verification three: identity check + wire transfer (10 minutes each)

  • Some accounts trigger KYC identity verification — upload documents as prompted. Counter-intuitive detail: the identity check uses your name in Chinese characters (matching your ID), while the bank payee uses pinyin — the two looking different is correct; don’t “fix” it
  • Payments → Add payment method → Wire transfer: payee name in pinyin (matching the bank account), account number, bank name, and the SWIFT code (bank website, or ask for “the SWIFT code for receiving USD wires”); a normal domestic debit card works. Set it to automatic payout

The payout rhythm and currency exchange

Auto-payout at $100, dispatched monthly on the 21st, arriving in 1-3 business days; convert USD to local currency in your banking app once it lands. Keep the official payout steps bookmarked.

Three classic mistakes (made for you in advance)

  • Skipping the treaty benefit on W-8BEN: silently donating 20 points of tax — over a year, real money.
  • An unrealistic mailing address: the PIN never arrives, verification stalls, ads pause — use an address that can actually receive mail.
  • Researching payouts at $100: every verification has a waiting period; do them on day one so the waiting overlaps with the earning.

Three words to know (just these)

  • W-8BEN: the tax declaration a non-US individual files with a US company — one form sets your withholding rate.
  • SWIFT code: your bank’s international wire address; required for USD, ask your bank.
  • Payout: the monthly dispatch of balances over $100, executed on the 21st.

✅ Acceptance (all must hold)

  • ☐ Tax info approved at the 10% rate
  • ☐ Address double-checked; PIN in transit (or verified)
  • ☐ Wire method added, automatic payout on
